We’ve looked into dozens of job postings for these positions and here are the requirements you need to meet in order to get a chance at a commercial kitchen.
First of all, you should complete a course so you get acquainted with theory and practice of food preparation and health and safety principles. You get a job as a chef if you have a qualification or if you start out as a kitchen porter.
You need to be able to work as a part of a team and in hectic environments for a kitchen job. Attention to detail together with housekeeping skills and ability to keep things organised are also appreciated. You need to be skilled with knives and have good motor skills.
Depending on the rank, you will have to follow chef’s instructions, take care of a kitchen station independently or assist others to do it. Chefs are responsible for day-to-day running of the kitchen which means they manage inventory and supplier relationships. Again, if you are not a head or sous chef, you will probably just participate in the unloading and storage of the goods.
